This is a beautiful place for a walk, especially on Sunday afternoons when the Society for Creative Anachronism is out in full force, practicing their sword fighting. Moon Lake – Idle Hour Park

ALThis is a perfect spot for a picnic. It has a playground, a pond where you can feed ducks, trash cans, a walking trail, and a lot of grassy areas where you can have a picnic. With lots of room, a nice view and a variety of things for kids too do, the park is a fun place to visit.
Sharon Johnston Park

New Market, AL
ALSharon Johnston Park is located to the northeast of Huntsville, and provides a delightful atmosphere for days outside in Madison County. The park features a variety of possibilities including picnics, swimming, fishing, playgrounds, a shooting range and campgrounds. It is the location of the annual Scottish Festival as well.
Big Spring Park

ALAs the name suggests, the park features a large lake fed by a spring. It is located in the center of the city of Huntsville, and is where many events and festivals are held. In addition to hosting the Concerts in the Park, the Big Spring Jam in the fall, and the Panoply Festival in the spring, the park lies adjacent to the Civic Center and Huntsville Art Museum. The lake is full of ducks and fish, and you can always find parents and children feeding both.

You can park close to the entrance and have a short pinic right inside the gates surrounded by towering trees and greenery or you can make a moderate hike out of it and go up to the waterfall and have a lovely picnic there. I highly recommend checking out this hidden gem.

The view over the hill is awesome, especially since you get to see a beautiful view of the city. You can also avoid the hill and just walk along at the foot of it as it traverses back farther and farther. Or you can follow the stream and enjoy the shade on the warm summer days. Cherry blossoms, horses, lizards—it is large enough that during the week days when it is free to park and explore there are so few people that it feels almost like just you and nature in Los Angeles which is a definite rarity.

This spot also offers access to a playground if you have kids with you and a covered gazebo that can be rented from the ranger station if you plan on having a larger gathering of people. There is plenty of parking and it has a restroom within a five minute walk. The area as a whole also has access to a bait/snack shop and there is a place to shower nearby so you can rinse off after swimming.
Silver Falls Rest Area

There is also free wi-fi and reasonably good cell phone reception. The best part of this spot is just south of the park because it includes a part of the White River and a small waterfall. There are numerous picnic tables and barbecue grills along the riverbank and a few overlooking the river. The diversity of picnic facilities accommodates both persons with mobility limitations and persons with a sense of adventure.
